No need to worry about your fitness, there’s plenty of choice to suit varying levels of mobility – the choice is completely up to you.
At Riverside Meadow, we’ve found that some of the best sports for seniors include…
Taking a breezy stroll might not seem like a sport, but it is a great way to keep up levels of fitness without taking on anything more strenuous. Going for a walk every day allows you to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air. It doesn’t matter about how fast or slow you can walk, what matters is that you enjoy the gorgeous scenery and have fun whilst you do so!
There’s no shortage of stunning parkland and greenery to explore around Riverside Meadow residential park. Local nature spots we recommend exploring include Haldon Forest Park, Bicton Park Botanical Gardens and Northenhay Gardens.
Swimming is a great form of exercise, even if it’s just a few lengths! The warm water can help to reduce the impact on the joints caused by other forms of exercise such as running, so it is a great option for those reaching their later years. It’s even great for improving your cardiovascular health!
Exeter Golf and Country Club, just a few minutes away from Riverside Meadow, features an indoor pool open throughout the year and even an outdoor heated pool too! Plus, the indoor pool has a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna – perfect for unwinding after a busy day.
Yoga or tai chi are fun, low-impact fitness activities that can be enjoyed on your own or in a group. They’re great for stretching your muscles, improving core strength and flexibility as well as improving your balance. It can also be a good way to relieve stress and improve mindfulness.
Many local gyms run yoga classes, so be sure to sign up. Don’t worry if you don’t want to visit a gym, however. One of the great things about yoga is that you don’t need any equipment, so you can enjoy it from the luxury of your park home! Simply find some space in the living area or your garden and enjoy!
Lawn bowling is a gentle sport that can be played with a few friends. It’s fun, easy and doesn’t require too much hassle. Simply gather a few friends or fellow residents from the retirement park community and head down to your nearest bowling green.
We recommend trying out Topsham Bowling Club for a great game of bowls.
Golf is a sport that everyone can enjoy, no matter their level of experience. Whether you’re venturing out onto the course as a single or playing with others, it’s a fun game that gets you moving whilst you enjoy it! It’s a great way to keep fit and get the heart pumping. You may even get to work out your brain too as you try to problem-solve your way out of tricky holes and ditches!
Who said growing old meant giving up sports activities? There’s plenty to do around Riverside Meadow park, we’re sure you will find something that suits your tastes. These are just a few of our suggestions but there are many other options. For instance, why not go for a bike ride around local parkland, take up dancing lessons or try your hand at a spot of croquet?
